Day 174: RSC does A Midsummer Night's Dream entirely on Google+ and it looks predictably awful.

Apparently the Royal Shakespeare Company has been doing a weird live-streaming concept version of A Midsummer Night's Dream on Google+ for the past three days. It relies heavily on user interaction and the assumption that anybody at all uses Google+. It looks fucking awful. The good news is that it's on Google+ so literally no one will see it.

Day 126: What I Learned: A Mid-Summer's Night Dream

Is this supposed to look like a bastardized nativity scene? (via)
So it was all an elaborate revenge on the women for not doing exactly what their husbands and fathers said? And what happened to the Indian boy that Titania adopted? The one that Oberon was so mad about? Oh yeah, he took the child away from her in the end, "shamed" her by having her fall in love with an ass, and then she forgave him and was in love again by the end of the night. Uh, that'll show her?

I hate this play. I know it's a lot of people's favourite, but I hate it.

Luckily, tomorrow I start Hamlet. I freaking LOVE Hamlet. Yay!!!

Day 125: There's a Midsummer Night's Dream LEGO MOVIE?

Aww...look at the cute little Midsummer Night's Dream Lego...
via brickshelf

Tee hee. How did they make the Lego donkey head? I want to make this.

Awww...look at his little face. His little ass face.

Also, there's a Lego movie of A Midsummer Night's Dream? Wow! Don't get too excited, it's pretty awful. On the one hand, it's a cool concept. On the other hand, it's also the shittiest thing I've ever seen. Why is everyone played by Lego George Lucas? What the hell is going on?
This was posted a year ago on YouTube and has 24 views. I'm not sure how that's even possible. I don't think I've ever seen a video that has only 24 views. Well, it just got the My Shakespeare Year bump so we'll see if that helps (except that I think it's dreadful).

Oh, you want to see something with better production value but WAY higher creep factor? Check out this puppet Midsummer Night's Dream:
How fucking creepy is that?

Day 124: Turns out Shakespeare was a gleek

Here's my favourite thing from A Midsummer Night's Dream: (I made this using that Facebook Graffiti app)
Real quote. And no, Puck didn't say it (that would have been cool though).

Day 123: A Midsummer Night's Word Cloud

This one is gorgeous! It doesn't make me think of night time or dreams, but it does make me think of psychedelic '60s groovy font, a la Yellow Submarine or something. I love it! Again, these fantastic wordles are from SCC English.

Day 122: A Midsummer Night's Sock Monkey

Sock Monkey A Midsummer Night's Dream, by David Jones (fineartamerica)

You spotted snakes with double tongue,
Thorny hedgehogs, be not seen;
Newts and blind-worms, do no wrong,
Come not near our fairy queen.

Weaving spiders, come not here;
Hence, you long-legg'd spinners, hence!
Beetles black, approach not near;
Worm nor snail, do no offence.

It says nothing about monkeys. Carry on, sock monkeys!

Day 121: May Day! Whatever that is...

I know two things about May 1st, also known as May Day. First, it has something to do with a be-ribboned pole called a May Pole, as seen here:
I have no idea what they're doing and I don't plan on looking it up. (via)
And second, as I've recently learned, it's the setting of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Specifically, the night in question is the evening of April 30/May 1, and when the dawn breaks at the end of the play it is May Day. How that makes sense is beyond me because May 1st is clearly not "midsummer" by any stretch of the imagination.

I feel like I learned all this once but have forgotten it, so I can't tell you any more of the details. I mean, I could if I looked them up but...

Day 120: New Play Tuesday! A Midsummer Night's Dream

These spineless classics are awesome
A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of Shakespeare's most famous and most popular plays. It's a lot of people's favourite, including my partner Mike and my mom. It's not one of mine, however. Luckily, I've already read it, so maybe I can just read it quickly this time. I'm just hoping I can get through the week without Mike quoting Puck:

If we shadows have offended,Think but this, and all is mended,That you have but slumbered hereWhile these visions did appear.
He quotes that a lot. Like, a LOT, a lot. Which is weird because how often can it possibly come up naturally in a conversation?

Sigh. It's going to be a long week.
