Day 121: May Day! Whatever that is...

I know two things about May 1st, also known as May Day. First, it has something to do with a be-ribboned pole called a May Pole, as seen here:
I have no idea what they're doing and I don't plan on looking it up. (via)
And second, as I've recently learned, it's the setting of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Specifically, the night in question is the evening of April 30/May 1, and when the dawn breaks at the end of the play it is May Day. How that makes sense is beyond me because May 1st is clearly not "midsummer" by any stretch of the imagination. 

I feel like I learned all this once but have forgotten it, so I can't tell you any more of the details. I mean, I could if I looked them up but...
